The course will familairize students with major issues in 20th century poetry and provide training in the analysis of poems. | Contents
This course provides an introduction to 20th century poetry through the study of major periods and issues such as Modernism/Postmodernism, the Harlem Renaissance and Confessional Poetry. We will read a large variety of poems for breadth, as well as a small selection for depth and close analysis. Students will be introduced to the basic tools and methods for the study of poetry, and will be given training in how to employ them effectively in written exercises. | Form of teaching
Teaching period approximately 13 weeks, individual/project work approximately 4 weeks.
| Exam and assessment
One essay (maximum 8 pages double-spaced) at mid-term and one 3-hour final exam. The home exam counts for 2/3 and the school exam for 1/3 of the final grade. The students will receive only one final grade at the end of the course. | Date(s) of written examination
