Contents
The course falls in three parts: 1) a series of lectures will study the ethnographic project through comparison of two monographs 2) followed up by lectures on what characterise Visual Ethnography, and, 3) a series of seminar to develop the students'' project descriptions (including a film synopsis).

The Monograph lectures will give a thorough analysis of two monographs. Several topics related to these concrete research projects would be raised. Among others: What makes these books ethnographic? How is the research questions operationalised?

The lectures on Visual Ethnography focus on the relationship between the social sciences and visual work, and discuss different aspects of working scientifically with visual means.

During the seminar students write an individual description and plan for the master project, including a synopsis for the master film and a draft for the written master thesis. The course discusses how to define a project, how to argue for its interest and how to operationalise research questions. The course will also clarify how the different elements in a project description are interlinked.

The students should be able to:
- Identify the main question of interest for the research project
- Use knowledge of social scientific theory connected to the region and the chosen theme for the study
- Clarify how visual tools will contribute to this research project
- Make a plan and prepare for the fieldwork.

Form of teaching
Teaching consists of 6 lectures and a series of intensive seminars (approx. 5 x 4 lessons) where the students'' personal projects are developed.

Syllabus: 550 pages

Exam and assessment
Requirement: An essay comparing the two monographs will be given formative evaluation.
