| Contents Material culture remains a largely ignored field within the social sciences. In this course we explore the philosophical and social trajectories that have rendered things, technology, and materiality at large, far less attractive to the social scientist than the "social proper", such as social institutions, human agency and intentions. Most importantly, however, is to examine the significance of material culture for past and present social life. Building on various theoretical approaches (i.a. structuralism, phenomenology, actor-network theory) the course examines the "agency of things" in relation to human practice, belonging, memory and time.
