NOR-1020: Old Norse and language historiy. Special course for foreign students. Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring | Objectives The course provides basic knowledge of Norse language structure with the main emphasis on those aspects of grammar that are important to understand the development of the language up to modern times, but also with the aim of enabling students to translate standardised Old Norse prose. Students should know the main traits of Norwegian language development, and to some extent Scandinavian language development, from the earliest times to today. Of particular importance are the main changes in the language system, and the cultural, social and political conditions that influenced language development. The course does not qualify graduates to teach in Norwegian schools. | Contents Through close examination of the language development students will gain insight into how the phonological and morphological systems have changed from the Old Norse period and to today, primarily in Norwegian, but also in other Scandinavian languages. Students will also acquaint themselves with the most important syntactic differences between Old Norse and modern spoken Norwegian. In addition, students should acquire knowledge of the main development traits of the written language up to today. | Form of teaching Instruction consists of an average of 4 hours of lectures/seminars per week for 13 weeks. Exercises related to the teaching will be given regularly. Teaching-free weeks should be used for individual study and writing papers.
