SOS-2002: Project assignment/Bachelor dissertation Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring | Objectives The dissertation is a compulsory part of the Bachelor''s degree, along with SOS-2001 Sociological perspectives. It takes up an elective topic related to the optional subjects. The student may, if he or she wishes, attend lectures, etc. in any ooptional courses (SOS-1003-1008) concerned with the topic, but must draw up a more substantial reading list. He or she may also choose to base the dissertation on a topic already taken up at an earlier stage in their course of sstudy, drawing up a reading list of about 1000 pates which probes more deeply into the topic. This is done in consultation with the lecturer responsible for thte course. It is also possible to select a topic that has not been covered by any teaching, but this must be done in consultation with the department.
The objective of the dissertation is to give the student an understanding of how the perspectives in sociological analysis are employed to throw light on a specific topic. A collective project seminar will be held, along with lectures and collective supervision. In addition, the students will receive individual supervision twice in conjunction with their dissertation work. A reading list of approximately 1000 pages is drawn up in connection with the dissertation. The choice of topic and the self-chosen reading list must be approved by thte lecturer responsible for the course.
The dissertation must be approximately 30 typed sheets in length. Approval may be obtained for two or three students to write their dissertation jointly, but the portion for which the individual person is responsible must be clearly stated and the dissertation must be correspondingly longer. | Form of teaching Seminar 2 hours a week with lectures and collective supervision: individual supervision. | Exam and assessment Project dissertation (15 pages). Optional topic chosen in consultation with the lecturer responsible for the course no later than 3 weeks after the course begins. Oral examination.
Examinations are evalutated using a five-stage scale of grading, from A-E, for those that are passed, and F for a failed examination.
The course is open for re-sit examination early in the following semester. | Contact person/lecturer Gøril Erikstad | Recommended reading/syllabus See homepage. | Homepage http://uit.no/sosiologi/2001/10
