The course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the functions of language and will approach this field of research from different perspectives (monologically, dialogically, and polyphonically). The course also offers competence in media analysis and discusses different so-called "news values" (negativity, facticity, etc.) and how these values are strategically expressed and applied in media. The course will also study how discourse phenomena influence grammar.
Contents
The course examines how ideology is realised grammatically and lexicographically in media texts. The course provides an introduction to how language (texts and discourses) functions in society and between different users, in addition to basic pragmatics. Recommended previous qualifications/courses: The course requires high levels of general competence in language and grammar as well as an interest for the social relevance of language and social responsibility in general. Knowledge of language variety (in speech and writing) is also recommendable.
