HIS-2012: Europe in Africa: Development or underdevelopment? Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring
| Objectives This subject is one of the optional subjects for Bachelor degree studies in history and is also available to students from other study programmes.
| Contents The aim of this course is to offer theoretical, scientific-historical and historiographical insights into European intervention, in different forms, in Africa south of the Sahara (trade, missionary activities, colonization and assistance) in the light of the expression "development". How has Africa been integrated into the world economy, and what kind of consequences did European business have on African society from an economic, social and political point of view? What kind of concerns and argumentation are to be found in the choice of texts from historical and social science research literature, seen in relation to the question of whether European business has had a positive or negative influence on African development. Some texts may be viewed as a means of understanding African thinking (e.g. Fanon, Mandela, Nkrumah, Nyerere), but the majority are depictions and interpretations of Western and African history. The nature of the work consists of seminars, with a component of lecturing and overview, while most of the time will be spent on student presentation and discussion relating to the texts.
