FAR-3016: Isolation, purification and structure elucidation of organic compounds Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Examination semester Spring
| Objectives To enable the students to determine the structure of organic molecules by use of various spectroscopic and spectrometric methods and to give them a good understanding of how the different metods works. | Contents The course will give the students an advanced understanding of various spectroscopic methods (UV-VIS, IR, NMR) and how these methods can be used in structure elucidation of organic compounds. Various mass spectrometric (MS) methods and their use in structure elucidation will be discussed. Recent advances in HPLC column technology and its use in isolation and purification of organic compunds will also be discussed. At the beginning of the course each student will be given a number of compounds (n ¿ 4) with unknown structure, and the structure of the compounds must then be determined by use of UV-VIS, IR, NMR and MS. The purity of the compounds will be tested by use of HPLC-analysis. | Compulsory prerequisites FAR-2011 Drug Chemistry and Cellular Pharmacology, FAR-2021 Pharmaceutical analysis | Form of teaching Lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory exercises. | Coursework requirements
