Contents
The course gives an introduction to the roots and history of Judaism, with special emphasis on sources such as the Bible, rabbinic writings, and mediaeval and modern Jewish philosophy and theology. The course also addresses central ideas such as Creation, the relationship between God and Israel (e.g. the Law and the Chosen People), and the Messiah. In addition, modern forms of Judaism will be discussed; reformed, orthodox and conservative Jews, as well as topics such as ethics, women and Zionism.

The course also gives an introduction to the sources of Islam and the religion¿s origin and growth, to theological and philosophical debates which have had formative influence on the development of Islam. Today Islam is dominated by two major traditions; Sunni and Shi¿a. The curriculum provides examples of these traditions¿ faith and practice, as well as the ideas of Sufism (mysticism). This study of Islam will also provide a short insight into Islam in the Nordic countries. Methodological and theoretical challenges are central in the various parts of this course, and are connected to a religious scientific approach to Judaism and Islam.
