NOR-2027: Linguistic Norm and Correctness. Special course for foreign students. Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Objectives The students will become able to describe and discuss central questions of standardisation in Norwegian - and to what extent national, social and pedagogical considerations have been used as a basis for the standardisation for our two written standards. Furthermore, they will acquire a sufficient basis for evaluating the linguistic quality of different texts, e.g. from newspapers, public language, and different types of specialised language. | Contents The course includes language standardisation theory, the standardisation of the written standards bokmål and nynorsk in a historical perspective, and current questions in the standardisation of the two standards. Also questions of language correctness will be discussed, e.g. a discussion of why one way of expressing oneself can be seen as better than another.
Required previous qualifications/ courses: The student should have completed the courses in literature at 1000 level, or equivalent. In addition, Norwegian language proficiency equivalent to NOR-0100 Norwegian for foreign students is required, i.e. a one-semester course which is based on previous knowledge equivalent to a passed Norwegian level III course/the Bergen test.
Recommended previous qualifications/ courses: The NOR-1000 courses in language, but students without specific previous knowledge may also take the course. | Form of teaching Teaching is organised as a combination of lectures and seminars. The teaching at the beginning of the semester (the first twelve weeks) is mainly intended to give the students a basis for writing a semester assignment on language standardisation/ language correctness. The topic of the paper is selected by the student in agreement with the teacher. After the first period of teaching, a four-week period with no teaching follows, where the students work on their semester assignment. At the end of the semester, materials relevant for the oral exam will be taught. The students are to submit a list of their syllabus which must be approved by the teacher.
Language of instruction: Norwegian | Exam and assessment A semester assignment (10-12 pages) and an oral exam. The written paper counts for 50% and the oral exam for 50% of the final grade. Written standard to be used in the written paper: The paper in at least one course at 2000 level must be written in bokmål, and at least one in nynorsk.
