FYS-1002: Electromagnetism Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring
| Contents This course is based on previous knowledge in mathematics corresponding to the courses MAT-1003 Calculus 3 and FYS-0100 General Physics or 3FY from the Norwegian High school. The objective of the course is to demonstrate how apparently unrelated natural phenomena, such as electric and magnetic effects, are put together under Maxwell''s equations. The course will give the students the ability to formulate and solve problems of a wide scope in electromagnetism. In turn, this will lay the basis for understanding of many modern applications in for example, optics, radar and communication. The course comprises electro- and magnetostatics, induction, direct and alternating currents, Maxwell''s equations, electromagnetic waves, polarisation, reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction. | Recommended previous qualifications FYS-0100 Basic physics, MAT-1003 Calculus 3 | Form of teaching Lectures: 50 hr Exercises: 30 hr
