LIN-1011: Syntax Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year at bachelor´s level | Language of instruction English | Examination semester Spring
| Objectives Students will gain knowledge of universal and language-specific characteristics of the syntax of natural languages, and skills in syntactic argumentation and analysis of data from different languages. | Contents The first semester of studies in linguistics deals with linguistic knowledge and the structure of linguistic competence. Humans have the ability (rule-governed creativity) to produce an infinite number of new sentences using a limited number of words and rules. This rule-governed creativity is unique to human beings. This course focuses on what this remarkable ability consists of, and tries to reveal characteristics that are universal to all human languages. This is a theoretical introduction to syntax, focusing on syntax as a cognitive system, i.e. a kind of knowledge which determines how native speakers behave linguistically. The aim of the course is to give students an understanding of the fundamental distinction between linguistic competence (as an abstract system) and linguistic performance, and of the significance of this distinction in the study of syntax, especially in the form of universal principles and language-specific parameters. The course will cover both Norwegian and general syntax.
