What makes a society hang together? How do people manage to trade together (or not)? What does it mean to belong to a group, a place, a people and a nation?

In this introduction Social Sciences course we shall address many different questions that relate to living in society. We shall give an overview of various Social Science perspectives concerning how society functions, how social life is organized for small groups and personal relationships between individuals, as well as in large organizations.

We shall also provide an overview of how Social Science researchers set about acquiring knowledge about society, and how people understand their lives. Which questions are we able to fin answers for? What is the procedure concerning answers we do obtain? How should we separate the good explanations from the bad? The course will also tackle the difference between popular and Social Science/academic understandings.

Social Studies consists of a series of academic fields differ in both the types of sections of society they study and the kind of questions with which they are most concerned. In this course we shall tackle various differences of this kind and we shall do this against a background of important things that are common to all these fields. The question of what Social Science knowledge is all about is relevant in all fields, and there is also strong agreement between these fields concerning a number of expressions and views.

The course is run co-operatively between the Institutes of Sociology, Education, Planning and Local Society Studies and Social Anthropology.
