Contents
This course introduces two concurrent main theoretical perspectives: the instrumental-rationalistic and institutional-sociological perspectives. With regard to the former, focus is directed towards the question as to how organizations theoretical insights can be practically understood and implemented, for example pertaining to the re-structuring of organizations. With regard to the latter, institutional approaches focus upon how modern organizations adopt forms that reflect the ideas or ''organization recipes'' of their surroundings. Themes addressed include:
- American new institutionalism after 1977
- Scandinavian pragmatic institutionalism
- Theories of knowledge-transfer and translation
Form of teaching
The course has multiple teaching approaches
Exam and assessment
One term paper and one oral exam.

The exams consist of:
- One term paper (approx. 6000 words) on a given theme, with a deadline of 14 days.
- One oral exam

The term paper will be graded first. The student must receive a passing grade on the term paper before continuing on to the oral exam. The oral exam provides the student with the opportunity to adjust their grade a maximum of one letter grade above or below (according to the grading scale A-F) their original grade. The combined grade will be determined after the oral exam.

It is also possible to move up to a continuation exam.

In the event the student did not pass the term paper, it is possible to provide an improved presentation at the oral exam. In the event the term paper has passed but the oral exam is not a pass, it is possible to re-do the oral exam on the grounds that the term paper received a passing grade (see the exam regulations at the University of Tromsø).
