Objectives
The course aims to give students a historical, theoretical and analytical insight into fantastic literature and science fiction.
Contents
We shall work with a selection of novels and short stories from several periods and language environments, from Mary Shelley''s Frankenstein to Marge Piercy''s He, She and It, with the aim of studying different genre conventions and other literary features, as well as providing an overview of the development of fantastic literature. Particular emphasis will be placed on how and to what purpose literary texts may mediate the unknown (e.g. the supernatural or the new). One central theoretical starting point will be Tzvetan Todorov''s book about the fantastic.

The textual analyses and theoretical discussion will be more profound and comprehensive than in the corresponding course at the 2000 level, and the social aspects and cultural dimensions of the texts will be more emphasised.
Form of teaching
The course runs throughout the semester, with scheduled periods for study and writing. Method of teaching: seminars, with an emphasis on student participation. The students must write at least two minor assignments within the duration of the course. Tutoring will be given during the course.
