FYS-3020: The physics of medical imaging Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Language of instruction English. | Examination semester Spring
| Objectives The purpose of this course is to provide an inspiring and comprehensive overview of the basic physics and engineering principles of medical imaging. On completion of the course, the students shall understand the physical principles and current technologies behind radiography, computed tomography, radioisotope imaging, ultrasound imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging. | Contents The basic physical processes behind each of the chosen medical imaging techniques will be explained from first principles. Special emphasize will be put on understanding the units and scales of the different imaging techniques, and the students shall develop an understanding of the physical limitation of each imaging technique. The fundamental concepts of medical image processing and analysis will be developed throughout the course, and the students shall handle real world images formed by the different imaging modalities.
The course is aimed at practicing physicians and medical personnel, and students with a background in medical informatics. Also physics students specializing in image processing could benefit from taking this course. The course is cross-disciplinary, and hence, the necessary physical background will be introduced along the way.
The course includes 40 hours of lectures, and 30 hours of recitals and problem solving. The course will include several projects that involve actual medical imaging devices and actual medical images. | Recommended previous qualifications TLM-3010 Telemedicine Applications , TLM-3020 The Health Service , INF-3792 Medical informatics | Form of teaching 40 hours of lectures, and 30 hours of recitals and problem solving. | Exam and assessment Evaluation of 4 project reports, Collective evaluation of portfolio assessment. | Recommended reading/syllabus W.R. Hendee and E.R. Ritenour, "Medical Imaging Physics", 4th ed., Wiley-Liss, 2002 | Homepage http://uit.no/fysikk/fys3020?Language=en
