BIO-3510: Population genetics Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Objectives Provide an understanding of the genetic changes that occur within and among populations in the nature. | Contents The course gives an introduction to population genetics. The following main themes will be covered: detection and measurements of genetic variation; evolutionary effects of mutation, migration, selection and small population size (random drift); molecular population genetics incl. neutral vs. selection theories for genetic variation; studies of multifactorial traits that are influenced by many genes plus the environment incl. artificial selection of those (breeding genetics). Practical applications of populaton genetics will be exemplified from fishery biology and other aquatic/ecological fields. | Compulsory prerequisites BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology | Form of teaching The course has multiple teaching approaches | Exam and assessment 4 hours written examination, lab-reports | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request |
