LIN-2013: The Origin and Evolution of Language Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year. | Language of instruction Norwegian/English | Objectives The students should be able to show knowledge of the materials described in the course description. Students must also develop the skills for oral presentation and argumentation, as well as the skills necessary for group work and individual project work. | Contents In order to explain how language acquisition can possibly take place, generative linguistics assume a constant core of unconscious knowledge (UG, universal grammar), upon which children build when they acquire a native language. Despite this constant core, language is infinitely variable, and the language of a single individual is as unique as a fingerprint. Based on this foundation, this course is a thorough introduction to theories of language change. The course discusses both external (sociological) and internal (linguistic) conditions, and shows how external changes over time can lead to internal changes. Particular emphasis will be on the relationship between child language acquisition and language change.
