FAR-2001: Basic course in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics Work Load 15 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical. | Level of course/Year of study Second and third year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Autumn
| Objectives The course offer students an introduction to biostatistics, epidemiology and health care economics, particularly in view of the field of medication. The course aims to enable students to interpret results of scientific studies, in general, and pharmaco-epidemiological studies in particular, independently and critically and to understand how pharmacoepidemiological studies are prepared. Moreover, the course aims to convey an understanding of how pharmacoepidemiological studies form the basis for decisions.
| Contents The course is divided into two parts: Part I Biostatistics and epidemiology Students must be able to describe data by means of the most common descriptive techniques, and they should be familiar with normal distribution and its properties. They should be able to assess validity and conditions for the use of statistical tests, to chose and implement tests of hypotheses. They should be able to calculate confidence intervals and know what they imply, calculate using a calculator and use charts to calculate probability. They should be able to predict the statistic durability of statistical calculations in reports about scientific studies. They should also be able to discuss the causality concept and define concepts used in descriptive, analytical and clinical epidemiology. The students should be familiar with the principles of age adjustment and be able to discuss common epidemiological morbidity and mortality charts. A compulsory course exam will be held in October of the third term.
Part two: Pharmacoepidemiological, clinical trials and pharmacoeconomy. Epidemiological design of studies, confounders, errors of measurement and estimation, targets of exposition and disease in pharmaco-epidemiological studies, observational studies, clinical trials, pharmacoepidemiological register studies, types of health care finance studies and "quality of life" studies.
