Contents
Introduction to how archaeologists construct knowledge about the past using material remains. The course provides an introduction to archaeological thinking about time, landscape, people and society, as exemplified by themes in global and regional prehistory. Themes include the development of biologically and culturally modern humans, small-scale hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies, the development of social inequality and the rise of state societies and urbanism. Several arenas of contemporary archaeological practice are also presented: cultural heritage management, museums and the political context of archaeology. Finally, selected regional and other research projects are presented to introduce some of the research topics that characterize Tromsø archaeology.

Lectures and seminars.

Seminar groups are offered periodically for additional discussion of course themes and for work with writing skills exercises.
