PSY-1000: Psychology through phenomena Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Autumn
| Objectives The course gives an introduction to psychology, and can be studied as part of ExFac. The course is part of the evaluation process for admissions to the professional program in clinical psychology.
| Contents The course is based on phenomena, meaning that different themes from psychology are presented in a context that allows them to be recognized from daily life.
Any one semester, the course encompasses a selection of themes, in order for each to be treated thoroughly (about three weeks per theme). In practice, this means that 4-5 themes are presented each semester. The selection of themes from one time to another will depend on the teaching resources available.
The literature and teaching covers themes from modern areas of psychology, and they will be taught from a theoretical and applied perspective. Examples could be psychological disorders, sexual habits, drug abuse, fear of flying, eating disorders, season-related depression, work conflicts, effects of brain damage, systematic biases in thinking and decision making etc.
The teaching will focus on descriptive and phenomenological aspects of the themes. The students can still read relevant theory or conduct small investigations/exercises, provided that these activities fit with the overall goal of increased understanding of the phenomenon.
The course is flexible in terms of work activities (depending on lecturer, the theme and other conditions). Despite this, each theme will have some permanent components:
- Literature (a popular science article, a book chapter, web-pages, etc.) - One or two introductory lectures for each theme - Demonstrations, exercises.
| Form of teaching Teaching will take place about 8 times, over 1-2 hours each time, with exercises, seminars, and demonstrations. In principle, it will be possible to take the exam from reading the literature and materials only, but it will always be advantageous to take part in the teaching.
Literature: The course literature consists of 50-150 printed pages per theme. These readings are specified on the course web-page each year for the relevant themes.
| Exam and assessment
A four hours exam finishes the course at the end of the semester. This exam will consist of multiple-choice questions on the areas taught in that particular semester. The exam will be graded on a scale from A-E. If the students get the grade F. Make-up exam will be given the following semester. | Date(s) of written examination 29.11.2007 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Contact person/lecturer Svein Are Tjeldnes | Recommended reading/syllabus See home page. | Course overlap EXFACPS -1 9 sp EXFACPS -H03 9 sp EXFACPS -H98 10 sp EXFACPS -H97 9 sp EXFACPS -1 18 sp | Homepage http://uit.no/psykologi/3246/1
