BIO-3311: Synthetic peptides, Design and applications in biotechnology and drug development

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Type of course
Theoretical and practical.
Level of course/Year of study
First or second year at master''s level.
Language of instruction
Norwegian or English
Objectives
The course is for people studying chemistry, pharmacy, technology or biology who wish to specialise on peptide-related biotechnology and the development of therapeutic drugs.
Contents
The course deals with how biologically significant parts of proteins and peptides can be identified and used as lead compounds in pharmaceutical development. An outline of how peptide-based technology can be used as an instrument within modern biotechnology, e.g. for the identification of proteins and in the study of peptide and protein activity (peptide-based proteomics) will be presented. The students will be given a thorough introduction in how knowledge derived from studies of the activity of biologically active peptides can be used to design more potent and applicable compounds for possible use as therapeutic drugs. The course will comprise one theoretic and one practical part and cover material such as protein mapping, peptide modelling, synthesis of peptides in solutions, permanent phase synthesis, synthesis of amino acids and amino acid derivatives and changes in the peptide chain structure when peptide-mimetics are synthesised. The practical part of the course will include synthesis and in-vitro testing of biologically active peptides and peptide mimetics by means of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS). The lab exercises will be directly linked with on-going research activity at the Institute of Medical Biology and the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Tromsø.
