REL-3001: Newer myth and Theory of ritual Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Language of instruction Norwegian.
| Examination semester Autumn, Spring
| Objectives The course aims at strengthening the awareness of and practice in the analysis of myth and ritual as a major tool in religious studies. A selection of contemporary texts will provide the point of departure, many of which are both characterized by a critical examination of earlier theoretical works, and the attempt to open up new perspectives on the categories "myth" and "ritual" as well as reconsidering the texts and practices providing the traditional empirical basis of earlier approaches to myth and ritual. | Contents The purpose of the course is to examine the relationship between religion and film. Some of the problems in focus are the implications of film as a medium of religious preaching in different parts of the world; film, propaganda, and censorship; film as substitute of religion and as an intermediary of social values; the philosophy of cinema and its prehistory. Another important purpose of the course is to exercise the analytical skills in the study of religious motifs and tendencies in a selection of motion pictures. These analyses are to be grounded in current theories of film, myth, and symbol, but will not merely concern films with an evident confessional bias. | Form of teaching Lectures. | Contact person/lecturer Hans Petter Clemetsen/Siv Aina Hansen | Recommended reading/syllabus See homepage. | Course overlap REL-3001 -1 10 sp |
