Mål
The purpose of the anthropological part of the Arctic Norway course programme is to introduce students to the region''s cultural complexity. The purpose is also to supply students with some analytical tools that will assist them in understanding how cultural similarities and differences relate to ethnic relations in the area.
Innhold
The anthropological perspective focuses on the region''s interethnic dynamics as they unfold between peoples of Saami, Norwegian and Finnish origins. It relates historical processes of mutual adaptations, as well as changing governmental policies, to the present manifestations of cultural variations and ethnic revitalisation. After a period of governmentally enforced assimilation of the Saami to the Norwegian majority, the cultural and ethnic revitalisation now taking place signifies a major change in ethnic relationships in the North. Other debates are also taking place, focusing on the region''s cultural characteristics as well as its economic and political position within the nation-state''s imagery. The course provides an understanding of cultural aspects of regional and ethnic identity vis-à-vis the encompassing nation state and globalization processes.
