On behalf of the University of Tromsø we are happy to invite you to the workshop in Arctic Natural Climate Change. The present climate in the Arctic shows signs of rapid change with decreasing sea ice cover and increasing sea temperature of the Atlantic Water. The implications of this warming is highly uncertain, as modeling experiments projecting temperatures for the next 100 years show a large scatter at high northern latitude.
The main focus of the workshop is to present and discuss records of natural climate change from annual to millennial time scales, their causes and effects. The workshop is part of our activity linked to the international Polar Year and the IPY endorsed project Arctic Ocean Warming in the past (WARMPAST). The overall goal of this initiative is to advance our knowledge of climate warming in the Arctic , by studying past climate change in marine records. The problems to be addressed during the workshop are: 1) Rapid changes in the Atlantic Water inflow to the Arctic; 2) Ice sheet/glacier response to warming, 3) Improving ocean temperature and sea-ice proxies (ST); 4) Climate modeling.
The workshop is organized by the PhD-Trainee School in Arctic Marine Geology & Geophysics, and takes place at the Polar Environemntal Centre in Tromsø, Norway from Monday November 12th to Wednesday November 14th. After the workshop, on November 15th we plan a one day discussion and future plans forum for those interested.
