Home-based work is on the increase globally, it is a vital and growing part of economic modernization. In many developing countries, this type of work is a response to poverty and unemployment. In South Africa, informal work is an important source of livelihood for many, particularly women. However, they are not a homogenous group as the nature of work undertaken differs. Informal work consists either of street trading, own account work, or engaging in work either from home or from a different premises. This lecture is primarily concerned with women engaged in home-based work in Kwazulu/Natal. The lecture will discuss the nature of their work, their socio/economic profile, and the challenges they encounter.
