Invitation to the seminar Indigenous Peoples in Africa

Norwegian Church Aid and the Forum for Development Cooperation with Indigenous Peoples hereby invite you to the seminar: Indigenous Peoples in Africa

Date: Thursday 27 March 2008
Time: 13.15-15.45
Venue: Centre for Sami Studies, University of Tromsø, Teorifag building, House 2.

What are the challenges facing indigenous peoples, churches, NGOs and governments in implementing a rights-based approach to development for the most vulnerable peoples on the African continent?

Activist and writer, Nigel Crawhall*, explores the concept of 'indigenous peoples' as a category of rights holders. He links together issues of sustaining and valuing cultural diversity with the urgent need to protect biodiversity in nature. Indigenous peoples stand on the fault line between destruction of the forests and dry lands in Africa and possibility of a new form of democracy that increases devolvement of conservation responsibility to those who rely on the resources and know them best. Nigel Crawhall, who is the author of the Norwegian Church Aid Occasional Paper Indigenous Peoples’ in Africa, argues that the impact of globalisation of capitalism and the privatisation of property and natural resources are having the twin impact of making hunting and herding peoples extremely vulnerable to poverty and social disintegration on the one hand, and also putting at risk precious biological resources, including the second largest green space on earth - the Congo Basin.

*Dr Nigel Crawhall is a visiting scholar on the Erasmus Mundus programme at the University of Tromsø, Department of social anthropology, and Director of Secretariat of the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC).
