Title: Why common sense does not work in social sciences
As in any empirical science, researchers in social sciences have various rules and practices that govern their area. Although many of these rules and practices seem to be in accord with common sense. Professor Trafimow will demonstrate that they are not valid, and that they retard scientific progress.

Professor David Trafimow is a professor of psychology at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces (New Mexico), U.S.A. He was born in 1962. He received his B.A. in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1984, his M.A. in clinical psychology at Indiana University in 1988, and his Ph.D. in social psychology again at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993. Since then he held positions at Virginia Tech and New Mexico State University.
His general interest is in social cognition. He is particularly interested in understanding how cognitions about the self are organized, the interrelationships between self-cognitions and presumed determinants of behavior, and the cognitive and affective processes underlying attributions. He has an additional interest in methodological, statistical, and philosophical issues pertaining to science. His work on philosophy of science is exactly what will be the topic of the Nordlys Lecture.
