To be taken into consideration for grants, a letter of recognition from the tutor must be included in the application explaining why the fieldwork is of crucial importance for the project. Normally it is the tutor who applies on behalf of the student, but if the student applies directly, a letter of support from the tutor must be included. The deadline is February 2001.

The Department of Social Anthropology
Every year, some funds are put aside for hovedfags- and master students enrolled at the department, who are participating in seminars. If you need some financial assistance with travelling expenses, you can apply. However, there is not much money available, and there is no guarantee you will get a grant. If you want to try your luck, make sure to find out when the next board meeting at the department is held, and send your application before the dead-line. If you have specific questions on whether you stand a chance to get a small grant, you can ask the student counsellor at the Department of Social Anthropology, Inger Marie Johansen at e-mail: ingerj@sv.uit.no
The Faculty of Social Sciences
There is a certain amount of money put aside for students at Master and hovedfags level who have had their project proposals approved and are getting ready to live for fieldwork. To apply for this money, you will need to get hold of an application form from Gøril Skotnes or Turid Klokkevold. Turid’s office is in the corridor of the office of the Faculty of Social Sciences (you will find a copy of the contract in this brochure under application form for financial support for fieldwork). There are three application deadlines each year, February 15th, May 1st and November 1st. The applications including an estimate of expenses and the supervisor’s evaluation are ranked by the relevant department, on the basis of quality, feasibility, and relevance to the student’s thesis. The final decision on the allocation of financial support/grants is made by the Committee for Academic Affairs three times a year. This committee also sets the maximum amount given to each student within the two categories of classification of project-work specified above. The Faculty Board presupposes that the maximum amount used will not exceed that approved beforehand. The applications must include: a project proposal, an explanation of why financial support is needed, an estimate of expenses and specification of any financial support applied for elsewhere.
