In Tromsø, Northern Norway, a group of enthusiasts have formed the Coastal Society Arctandria. The purpose is to maintain the traditional coastal life-style of the area, particularly the tradition of the Nordlandsbåt – a sea-going vessel whose history goes back to the Vikings of the medieval era. Formerly these kinds of vessels were used for fishing, due to specialities of Norwegian coastline they were the main means of transportation. After the II World War, modern boats have outclassed traditional boat types. Though, during recent years, the nordlandsbåt has witnessed a revival. Old boats have been restored, new ones are built.
Our film follows activities in spring 2002 - out setting and sailing the society's flagship "Salarøy", building a new ship by local masters, use of traditional boat in recreational fishing. We have the boat stories of past and present alloyed into a dynamic blend of traditional and contemporary - with extension to the future.
