Beignets DEA
by Ousmanou Adama, Dahirou, Alain Tchoumtchoua Appolinaire
The film pictures a student couple, Justine and Clement, and the restaurant they run at Dang, the off - campus student town close to the university. The ‘beignets’ – the doughnuts - the couple make have very good reputation among the students, and the restaurant is going very well.
Justine is a PhD student in nutrition studies. Clement stopped his studies at Master level, in order to invest his time to their family business. He believes his wife has better chances of getting public employment after the PhD, since she comes from the Extreme North province.
One reason for their decision to start the restaurant, was the uneasiness they felt of being grownup in age, but financially dependent of their parents during the studies. Today the business supplies their breadwinning, and it gives surplus for helping their families and friends.
The film shows the very tight time schedule the couple has in order to manage the restaurant, take care of their child and keep up the research activities. The film also depict a very unusual practice, a well- educated man making doughnuts. This is no man’s work, but Clement is nevertheless highly respected as we see from the relationships to the customers and guests at the restaurant.
Justine’s main message for making the film, is that she wants the government to give financial support for students who want to establish small enterprises.
