WAB DISCOVERY PhD research scholarship (2007-2010)

At the Wittgenstein Archives (WAB) at the Centre of Culture, Language and Information Technology (AKSIS) at Unifob/University of Bergen a position of PhD research fellowship in philosophy is open for 3 years. The position is financed by the University of Bergen Faculty of Arts. It will be dedicated to WAB’s participation in the European DISCOVERY – Digital Semantic Corpora for Virtual Research in Philosophy project. The successful applicant will work closely with the WAB DISCOVERY project team and with the DISCOVERY consortium more generally. The workplace will be at the Wittgenstein Archives (WAB) at AKSIS in Bergen, Norway.

DISCOVERY is co-financed by the European Commission under the eContentplus programme and was launched in November 2006. It has a twofold aim: 1) to enrich with markup and group together a significant amount of philosophical content in a federation of interoperable web sites (Hyper-Federation); 2) to set up a peer-to-peer (p2p) network of desktop client applications that allows the generation of new knowledge by applying and testing different conceptual grids to the Hyper-Federation contents (Discovery). WAB will contribute to the project with structurally and semantically encoded transcriptions of 5000 pages of Wittgenstein Nachlass material, primarily stemming from 1929-1935 with the Big Typescript and the Brown Book as key material, and additional relevant secondary sources. WAB will also substantially participate in building the technological platform of the project.

The PhD project of the doctoral research fellow shall be related to WAB’s development of an ontology system (“ontology” or “concept design” as used in AI) for semantic enrichment of WAB’s transcriptions of the Wittgenstein Nachlass. The research fellow shall have an excellent mastery of German and English. Acquaintance with Wittgenstein research is considered an advantage, as is also acquaintance with the ”semantic web” and ontology languages such as OWL and tools such as PROTÉGÉ or RACER. Applicants must hold a master’s or corresponding degree.

For application, go to the University of Bergen official announcement of the PhD scholarship (English translation). The deadline is February 9, 2007.
