====== Computing facilities ======

This page contains information about our computing facilities.


===== Unix and Windows =====

The computer in your office runs either Windows or Unix. Usually you'll find
that most of the programs you need are installed on your office computer,
but for some things you may need to connect to a different computer.

If you're running Unix and need to use Windows, you can open a terminal
window and run the command ''windows''.

If you're running Windows and need to use Unix, you can connect to
our server ''abel'' using either the //WebTermX// program (if you're going
to use programs with a graphical interface), or //F-Secure SSH// (for
using the command line, running ''pine'' etc.).


===== Computing power =====

If your office PC is fast enough, we encourage running your computations
locally on that computer. In addition, we have several servers you may use for
running computations.

When running computations, there are a few things to be aware of regarding
how to handle large data sets, where to store large results, which
compilers to use, etc.

The Xerox machines on floor 7 and 10 can also be used as scanners
(you'll receive the result by email as a PDF file)

//Short name// is an alias that may be used from Unix. Type

  lpr -P8 filename.ps

to send ''filename.ps'' to the printer on the 8th floor.
Short names prefixed with //f// means colour printers, the rest are black & white.

===== Equipment available for loan =====

We have the following equipment available for loan for shorter
periods (up to 2 weeks):

  * Suitcase with laptop and video projector
  * 2 laptops
  * Some USB disks


===== Other equipment =====

The following rooms are equipped with a video projector:

  * SB-II/656 (6th floor)
  * SB-II/734 (7th floor)
  * SB-II/738 (7th floor)
  * SB-II/822 (8th floor)
  * SB-II/922 (9th floor)
  * SB-II/1326 and SB-II/1329 (13th floor)

The video projectors accept both analog and digital input (VGA and DVI),
and the two projectors on 13th floor may be linked to show the same picture
on both screens.

The meeting room on 7th floor (SB-II/734) is also equipped with a
