Department of Civil Engineering

Department - summary
The Department of Civil Engineering provides four specialisation streams in the third year, i.e. Construction Engineering, Building Engineering, Structural Design and Technical Planning.

The department has laboratories with a wide range of equipment and instruments and a large number of PCs and workstations that are used as an integrated part of many courses.

Student intake
The department's annual intake is approximately 70 students for the three-year engineering course. Successful completion of the three-year course makes possible entry into the fourth year of the 5 year engineering degree course at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Student evaluation
In most subjects students are evaluated by means of a written examination usually of 3-5 hrs duration. Examination results, possibly combined with laboratory performance and project evaluation, are given in terms of a scale from A to F, grade A being the best and A-E are pass grades. In a few subjects a pass/fail evaluation is used. Project and laboratory work is evaluated and combined with the relevant subject's examination result to give a final grading. The final year project is evaluated, after a peer presentation, by a staff committee.

Students leaving with a full set of pass results are presented with a Bachelor diploma and a certificate listing all grades obtained during the course. They can also use the Norwegian title "Høgskoleingeniør".

Teaching language
The teaching language in all courses is Norwegian.Courses in Norwegian for foreigners are given at Sør-Trøndelag University College or at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
