Where to start

Brief introduction for newcomers

You can find more information on the following topic from this web-page: Guidelines for International Students: http://www.ntnu.no/intersek/guidelines/arrival.html

  • Residence permit
All international students who are to stay in Norway for more than three months must have a residence permit. The students must go to Aliens Office at the Police Station. This must be done within the first seven days after arrival in Norway. All incoming students must have a valid passport for the duration of their stay.

  • National population register
If you plan to stay in Norway for more than six months, you have to register at the National Population Register (Folkeregister) in order to obtain a national ID-number.

  • Compulsory health check
All students from Spain, Portugal, Greece and countries outside Western Europe staying in Norway for more than three months, need to be checked for tuberculosis (TB.) Students from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan are exempted. The check must be done within three weeks of your arrival in Norway. You will receive more information about the health check at the Aliens Office.

  • Bank account
In order to get a bank account in Norway you need a personal ID number. This number is issued by the National Population Register (Folkeregister). See the 'National Population Register' section for instructions for obtaining the ID number.

  • Social security
When you receive your ID-number (see above), you become a member of the Norwegian National Health System (Folketrygden), and you will be asked to select your personal doctor among the doctors available.
Note: You will not be covered by the Norwegian National Health System if you take a trip outside Norway even for a few days. In this case you should have your own travel insurance that may be purchased at a travel agency.

If you need to see a doctor and you do not have a personal one, please contact Gløshaugen legesenter:

Address: Richard Birkelands vei 5, Gløshaugen campus
    Phone: 73 59 32 80 or 73 59 32 82
    e-mail: Gloshaugen.Legesenter@sit.no
In case of emergency, please contact St Olavs Hospital.
    Phone: 73 52 25 00 (Legevakten)
