Duration:

Abstract:
Weak gravitational lensing and cosmic microwave background measurements
are likely to provide the most important constraints on cosmological
models over the next decade. The purpose of this project is to use
weak gravitational lensing observations (with the Nordic Optical
Telescope and oterh ground- and space-based facilities) to accurately
measure the spatial distribution of dark matter over a wide range
of physical scales. The results will be used to constrain the properties
of the dark matter particles. The relative distribution of dark
matter and optically luminous galaxies will for the first time be
measured directly on scales of several tens of megaparsecs, and
the results will be compared to predictions from large-scale numerical
simulations. The observed dark matter distribution in clusters of
galaxies will be used as input for simulations of the cosmic microwave
background measurements that will be obtained with the ESA satellite
Planck after its launch in 2007.
