TETRA technology recommended for the Danish Public Safety Network
It is now recommended that Denmark’s Public Safety Network should be based on the TETRA technology. This is evident from the recommendations made by the Danish Radioutvalget (Broadcasting Committee). The National Police (Rigspolitiet) has headed the Committee where there has been participation from the Danish Ministries of Defence, of the Fisheries, of Home Affairs and Health, of Science, Technology and Development, the IT and Telecommunications Authority, the Preparedness Authority and the Ministry of Justice.
In connection with the committee work a number of analyses were commissioned from an external consultancy company (Gartner Danmark) of topics such as e.g. the need for radio communication, the choice made in other countries of technology and of which technology may best support the need for communication among the Danish emergency and preparedness agencies.
- I note that Radioutvalget has reached the same conclusions that are now the outcome of an extended evaluation process in Norway, a Public Safety Network based on the TETRA technology. The reports from Gartner Danmark are thorough, and I recommend anybody who is concerned about the cardinal functions of a Public Safety Network to take a closer look as them, says Tor Helge Lyngstøl, Head of Project in the Norwegian Public Safety Network Project.
A report from the Danish Ministry of Justice states that to establish a common public safety network with nationwide coverage is a complex project with many risks and it will involve many different parties from e.g. the preparedness sector, while at the same time entailing substantial investments. It is also pointed out that experience from other countries shows that a whole series of different factors will be of significance to the way in which procurement and development can be carried out, and within what time horizon.
The Danish Government is now setting up a negotiation secretariat under the Danish Agency for Governmental Management (Økonomistyrelsen). And following the Norwegian example, a steering group will be established for the secretariat.
