How do we experience music? What does body movement guide our cognition? How can knowledge about movement and sound create better technologies? These are some of the questions that we are working with in the interdisciplinary research group FourMs.
In the FourMs laboratories researchers from music and informatics work together to solve problems in music cognition, sensor technologies and machine learning. The common denominator is the mutual interest in studying both humans and machines as complex systems, and to analyse and synthesise such systems.
New technologies can help in answering some of the most fundamental problems of our cognition of music. But for this to happen it is important that music researchers are involved in the development of relevant technologies.
Music is one of the most complex examples of human communication, and music performance opens for human-computer interaction with very high requirements in speed, resolution, precision and response. Musical systems can be be small or large, simple or complex, mobile or stationary, and are therefore good test cases for technological research and development.
