Support granted for the year 1996
with further possibility for a total support period of three years.

Dear friends:

As you will remember, at the NorFA application deadline of March 1st, 1995, we applied for support for a new and significantly enlarged network between several EPR laboratories in four of the five Nordic countries. This idea and application originated from the previous network initiated by Anders Lund in Linköping, comprising Heikki Joela in Jyväskylä, Jørgen Byberg and Jens Arne Pedersen in Århus, and myself in Oslo. At our last very successful workshop meeting in Sandbjerg in September 1994 it was decided that I should be responsible for the next network application to NorFA. With the help of all of you, an application was written up and submitted to NorFA, and each of you received a copy of the application. I am happy to inform you that just a few days ago I received notice from NorFA that the application has been granted for 1996, opening for renewals for a total of three years duration.

The total amount for spending in 1996 will be NOK 150.000 which should be sufficient to permit a new workshop to be arranged - this time in Oslo- and several long-term PhD-student exchange visits as well as some short term visits between laboratories for faculty and evt. staff. With experience from the previous network fresh in memory, I am sure that we will have considerable use of these money for the promotion of EPR spectroscopy in the Nordic countries. I will take the opportunity to cite from our application the major goal for the network:

This Network is aimed to bring together nordic expertice within the broad field of research using EPR spectroscopy and related methods as one of the tools. By this we wish to promote advanced research education, stimulate to inter-nordic mobility of students and research personnel, and more efficiently utilize differences in instrumental facilities between participants in the Network.

In the time to come now, possible activities during the first year of the network must be planned. A workshop will be arranged in the Oslo region in Spring time with tentative title Biological Applications of EPR spectroscopy. Suggestions for lecturers are welcomed!! More details about this workshop will be circulated later. I also want suggestions for PhD student exchange visits and short visits by research personell or technical personell sent to me not later than January 1996. We are quite many laboratories in this new network, and some planning in advance is necessary to have a reasonable distribution of the funds between laboratories.

So to all of you - please sit down and do some thinking about how to make the best use of some support from NorFA to this Network, and send me your thoughts or conclusions by January 1996.

Best regards from Einar.

New EPR Instruments in the Nordic Countries

Evidently, EPR spectroscopy is gaining acceptance in our granting agencies as a spectroscopic tool with innumerous possibilities for applications in physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. We know that new instruments recently have been installed in Sweden (Stockholm) and Denmark (Århus), and now we may inform you that Anders Lund and the Linköping group is getting a new FT-EPR/ENDOR machine from Bruker installed in August 1996 (for a total of about SEK 6 mill) and here at the ESR laboratory in Oslo a new ESP 300E EPR/ENDOR (cw) from Bruker will be installed in March/April 1996 (NOK 3,5 mill). These are good news for the network!
