How to publish files on your personal web page

In most cases the best way to publish files is through your home page:

1. Create a folder in your home area and name it www_docs. The Internet address to this area is: http://folk.uio.no/your_username/
2. On the PC, this folder will be mapped as my_www_docs (W:) the next time you log in. Files copied to the W: drive will automatically get correct permissions
3. On UNIX, you can set correct permissions on the whole document tree under www_docs by typing chmod -R 755 ~/www_docs/

If html-files are put into the folder they will be interpreted as traditional web pages (example). Other file types put into the folder will be available for download (example).

How to publish files using FTP

USIT suggests you use the method above for all kinds of file publishing. If you have actual need of publishing via FTP you can be granted a file area which will be accessible through anonymous FTP to ftp.geologi.uio.no. We will do this for you if you give us a good reason why your web page will not do.
