Media Studies

Media Studies is an inter-disciplinary study that gives a broad introduction to cultural, social and communicative aspects of today's systems of mass communication, information and entertainment.

The study is organised as a program, and is collaboration between The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, The Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management and The Faculty of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics.

Basic level

The basic level is based on research traditions from both humanistic and social sciences. It consists of three courses:

  1. Visual communication (10 credits)
  2. The Media Public (5 credits)
  3. Media Sociology (5 credits)

Intermediate level

At the intermediate level the inter-disciplinary approach is broadened further to incorporate contributions from informatics. The study aims to develop a critical understanding for the distinctive character of the modern media. The intermediate level consists of 2 courses each counting 5 credits. There are currently 10 different course alternatives.

Masters degree

The master's degree study (Visual Communication) is a humanistic study aiming to give the student a deeper knowledge and develop skills to do a critical examination of the visual media culture. The study consists of 3 part exams, plus writing of a thesis. The study is normally programmed for two years, and towards the final grade the thesis accounts for 50%. The different courses consist of an introductory course in Media aesthetics and epistemology, Rhetorics and analysis, and an in-depth subject on theory and history. The introductory course is common for students in Drama/Theatre, Film Studies and Media Studies.
