Kunstnerens beskrivelse:
"The New Phonemic Alphabet"
Essentially we are constructing a "true alphabet" consisting of graphemes and phonemes. The graphemes are the visual characters, which stand as concrete representation for the phonemes, which are the abstract conception of the sound created by letters or symbols in a language. Phonemes themselves have no direct, real representation. They are rather the perception of an audible element of language in its most reduced form. For example, the concept of the sound the English letter "p" makes when it functions in a word is a phoneme whereas the written representation, the character "p," is the grapheme. With our installation, we are using the drawings as graphemes and the frequencies as phonemes. By pairing them together in sequence, words or sentences are created in an abstract language that cannot be spoken. Languages in which phonemes are represented by a limited number of graphemes are often termed "true alphabets." Our installation, therefore, constructs just such an alphabet. The installation seeks to create a vocabulary using relatable symbols which simultaneously are identifiable and ambiguous. Thus, no "true" understanding or meaning for the symbols can be universally defined, just as the frequencies are unpronounceable by the human tongue.
The indistinct language of the exhibition and the concrete implications of the title, The New Phonemic Alphabet, create an interesting discussion of truth and theoretical understanding as perceived through audible language and visual vocabulary in the context of a specific space.
