Finnmark is a meeting place for Sami, Finnish, Norwegian and Russian cultures. This marks Finnmark off as a special county. Moreover, many places in the county have a sizable population of immigrants from all the continents of the world, which contributes to the multicultural character of the region. In the coastal areas fishery is the most important industry, whereas in the interior districts it is reindeer herding and agriculture which dominate. Tourism and service industries are also important. Fish farming is a great growth industry in Finnmark.
Finnmark is renowned for some of nature’s most unique phenomena. In winter the sun is gone for two months, from approximately 21 November to 21 January. In this period the sky is often illuminated by the northern lights. The lack of light in the dark season is compensated for in the summer when the sun is visible around the clock! This is between 21 May and 21 July. In addition, there are unique opportunities for fishing, hunting, and outdoor life, both in summer and winter. The sheer size of the county enables you to move into the genuine wilderness without travelling very far. There is no conception of queues, and it is fully possible to choose a route where you will not encounter a single human being for days.
