Master Programmes at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology A master’s programme is a 2-year postgraduate study equalling 120 ECTS credits. Applicants for the master's programmes must have a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Once the programme is completed one may use the title Master of Science or Master of Technology. The Department of Computer Science and Media Technology offers the following master programmes:

11.11.2006 Master's Theses presentations June 8 and 9 2006 The master students in Information Security and Media Technology are presenting their work in K102 and K105 from 9.00 to 15.30 on June 8 and June 9 2006. Everyone is welcome to attend the presentatons. 20.05.2006 Presentation of Master’s Thesis in Hong Kong MSc in Information Security Tom Fladsrud presented his Master’s Thesis, “Face Recognition in a border control environment: Non-zero Effort Attacks’ Effect on False Acceptance Rate” at the International Conference on Biometrics in Hong Kong in January 2006. From his abstract Face recognition is a biometric authentication method that has become more and more relevant in the recent years. One method to reduce the number of people being falsely accepted is by combining the face recognition system with human supervision. To survey the additional value of a human supervisor, they conducted an experiment where they investigated whether a human would detect false acceptances made by a computerized system, and the role of hair in human recognition of faces. The study showed that, on average, humans were able to detect almost 80 % of the errors made by the computerized system. More over, the study shows that the ability of an individual to recognize a human face is a function of hair: the false acceptance rate was significantly higher for the image-pairs where the hair was removed compared to where it was present. This indicates that there is in fact a substantial opportunity for an impostor to circumvent the human guard using simple and cheap methods. Hair is a feature that may be easily manipulated, and this is perhaps the easiest and cheapest form of non-zero-effort attack on a face recognition system. Eirik Grythe won the price for best master's thesis in Media Technology. The evaluation states that his thesis, Object segmentation and text detection in lecture video, addresses a difficult problem within media technology in a professional and convincing way. Eirik developed algorithms and conducted experiments independently and the thesis will make a good foundation for further research in processing and indexing classroom videos. In Information Security, Bjarte Malmedal won the price for best master's thesis. The evaluation comity found that his thesis, Using Netflows for slow portscan detection, is a sound technical approach to network security. Research questions are concise, and the experiment is set up, conducted and documented professionally. Experimental evaluation of the proposed intrusion detection system is correct, and variations of main algorithm parameters give a clear view of its practical efficiency. The thesis make a notable contribution to better understanding application of data mining and machine learning techniques in intrusion detection systems. 29.11.2005 The annual Christmas Party On November 25 will the annual Christmas Party for the master students and the graduated masters take place at Huset.
