Course plan

Network and System administration is about putting together a networked system of computers, software (workstations, PC's and supercomputers), getting them running and then keeping them running in spite of the activities of users who tend to cause the parts of the system to fail.

Today, system administration is normally learned without any systematic training. It is passed on haphazardly, rather than being taught systematically. This is slowly changing, but the courses available are still mainly product specific certifications sold by companies with a vested interest in their products.

OPTIONAL MODULES

OPTIONAL MODULES

The aim of this course is to teach the principles, theory and practice of system management, including network and system design, analysis, efficiency and security. The course places emphasis on practical skills based on Unix, Windows and Macintosh platforms but teaches general principles along with their technical and ethical foundations. Courses include general system administration, core networking with extensive lab work, routing, security analysis and implementation, and culminates in a project/dissertation which amounts about 30% of the course. Students are expected to read and understand at least one research paper and explain it as a presentation to the rest of the class.

Oslo University College is working closely with SAGE ( System Administrators Guild ) to develop the state of the art materials.
