Entrance requirements and auditions
The Norwegian Theatre Academy is exempted from the standard Norwegian university entrance requirements. Separate guidelines have been prepared for entrance procedures. The criterion for acceptance is artistic talent, and this is assessed in artistic entrance auditions. Anyone can apply to take the entrance audition. Because of the international profile of the academy there are no requirements for Norwegian language skills. It is, however, expected that non-Scandinavian students acquire an understanding of Norwegian during their course of studies.
The entrance examinations for scenography
The date and content of the entrance examination is announced in the application form on the Academy’s website at the beginning of the academic year. Forms can also be obtained directly from The Norwegian Theatre Academy. The first examination consists of the applicant choosing one out of two assignments set in the application form. Applicants submit their chosen assignment to the Academy in the form of drawings, photographs, videos etc. They also submit ten slides of other relevant artistic material.
The jury consists of the Dean of the Academy, the Head of the Scenography Department, a lecturer from the Academy, an external scenographer and a student representative (observer). The jury’s professional judgement cannot be overruled. The external scenographer does not participate during the initial selection of submitted material.
On the basis of the submitted material, the jury selects a group who will progress to the second examination at the academy. The basis for selection is the candidates’ design abilities and the commitment they show in relation to the assignment. The second part of the artistic entrance examination is organised as a 3-day workshop held at the Academy, at which applicants are given various assignments which are completed in the form of models and drawings. The examination tests the applicants’ design abilities as well as their ability to express a clear vision and to communicate. Their ability and willingness to learn and to collaborate with others are also assessed.

The jury consists of the Dean of the Academy, the Head of the Acting Department, a teacher from the academy, an external representative from the theatre profession and a student representative (observer). The professional judgement of the jury is final and cannot be overruled.
The initial presentation is followed by a brief interview about the work. The presentation and interview will last a total of ten minutes maximum. On the basis of the first audition the jury selects a number of applicants who will be given an opportunity to proceed to a second audition. In the first audition the emphasis is on stage presence, compositional abilities and the applicant’s consciousness of his/her own work process.
The second part of the audition consists of a one-day programme, comprising individual exercises, group exercises, body and voice tests and tests of the applicant’s ability to cooperate, to act and interact under the direction of members of the jury. Emphasis is placed on the flexibility and precision of voice and body and the applicant’s ability to tackle concrete assignments in a creative and collaborative manner.
The third audition consists of a new one-day programme, in which the testing continues and is expanded to include specially adapted exercises composed by the jury after having assessed the candidates’ abilities in the first two auditions. The demands made of applicants are more stringent than in the first and second auditions, and applicants’ ability to take direction and instruction is assessed.
