BERGEN
Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, with approximately
250 000 inhabitants. It was founded at the end of the 11th century, and
was the country's single most important town during the middle ages. It
was the gateway to trade and cultural exchange with the rest of Europe
and served as royal residence and capital until the 1600's. During these
centuries Bergen became a vital link in the Hanseatic League of german
and baltic cities. German tradesmen lived permanently in the city and organized
the trade with foreign and Norwegian merchants. The historical evidence
of a thriving international port can be found everywhere in the architecture
and street names of the modern city, and makes Bergen an important focal
point for historical research.
