Studentane må kjøpe The Norton Anthology of American Literature (siste samleutgåva i eit bind) og George B. Tindall, et.al., The Essential America. Dei fleste pensumtekstane står i desse to bøkene. Relevante pensum sider i Tindall står i undervisningsplanen. I tillegg vil studentane ved semesterstart få utlevert ei Workbook, som inneholder ekstra tekstar og oppgåver til hjelp i studiet. Det er ein føresetnad at studentane les periode- og forfattarintroduksjonane i The Norton Anthology. Studentane bør også tileigne seg bakgrunnskunnskapar i amerikansk kultur og samfunnstilhøve. Tilrådde titlar er:
