Russia- Requirements and documents

The requirement for general admission should be qualifications at the level of Norwegian secondary school. We have used NOKUT’s (Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education) list of qualifications for each country.

First we will list the general requirements for higher education in Norway:

For Russia, the requirements are:

  • Attestat o srednem polnom obshchem obrazovanii (valid with: Prilozhenie k attestatu o srednem obrazovanii, tabel ltogovyh otsenok) + 1 year university education OR
  • Attestation on complete general secondary education (portrait format) + 1 year university education OR
  • Diplom o srednem profesionalnom obrazovanii (landscape format) + 1 year university education

English proficiency:

In addition, there is a requirement for proficiency in English.

Russian students may cover the requirement through:

  • English as their first foreign language over a period of minimum 7 years at compulsory/upper secondary school, are exempted from the English language test. The applicants must document this or provide proof of having taken a recognised examination/test.

If the documents do not show clearly that English has been the first foreign language over a period of at least seven years, applicants must provide a separate statement of this from their school.

If you have not had at least 7 years of English as your first language, an English-proficiency-test required.

The most commonly used tests are:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 for a paperbased test, a score of at least 170 for a computer-based test or minimum 60 for an internet-based test
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum score of 5.0.

Other ways to meet the requirement for proficiency in English can be found here:

Proficiency in Norwegian:

Most undergraduate programmes are taught in Norwegian. If you plan to study a programme taught in Norwegian, proficiency in Norwegian is required.

  • If you are already proficient in Norwegian, it is possible to prove this by taking the ‘Bergenstest’.
  • If not, it is possible to do a one-year programme in ‘Norwegian Language and Civilization’ for foreign students. Read more about the programme here:

For studies taught in English, proficiency in Norwegian is not required. See this link for programmes taught in English:

Special requirements:

Some programmes have extra requirements, in addition to the general requirements:

  • Engineering programmes require extra mathematics and physics
  • Computer studies require extra mathematics
  • General Teacher Education requires above average grades in Norwegian and Mathematics
  • Subject Teacher: Education in the Arts requires specialisation in Arts subjects.

Applications will be assessed individually to see if the requirements are met

Applications for master degrees:

If you apply for a master’s degree, your previous education must be comparable to a relevant Norwegian bachelor degree.

Accreditation:

If you have university education, the institution (and programme) must be recognised as university education in your home country. Institutions or programmes without accreditation will not be recognised as higher education.

Documents:

  • All transcripts from secondary education must be certified copies. This means that a notary public or a public office must certify the authenticity of the documents.
  • All transcripts form higher education must be sent directly from the issuing institution. Documents that are not sent directly from the issuing institution will not be assessed.
  • All documents must be both in their original language and translated into English or one of the following Nordic languages: Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

See more detailed information about documents in the ‘Guidelines for application’.
