Master of Environmental Health

HIT 220 918

Master of Environmental Health: 120 ECTS

The Master of Environmental Health Programme is two years long, and 120 ECTS

The length of time required to complete the programme is four semesters (or two years), but this time may be reduced given relevant transfer credits. It should be noted that this corresponds to a heavy workload and that it is based on a full-time study schedule.

Goals

Upon completing this programme candidates are expected to have in depth knowledge in many areas of environmental resource management. Among other things, candidates should understand how environmental resources are regulated, and how this affects health and the standard of living. An emphasis will be placed on understanding research methods, and critical analysis of information, and research results. Candidates will gain an understanding of how implementing different environmental strategies can contribute to sustainable development, protection of the environment and replenishment of resources. These issues will also be explored in relation to health management. Candidates will learn to work and communicate with colleagues working in related fields. They will also learn procedures for reporting and publishing research findings. The programme includes a Masters thesis that allows candidates in-depth study in the fields of environment, health and/or ecology. Individual learning goals will therefore be developed for each candidate.

Admission requirements

To be accepted to this programme candidates must have a Bachelor or Cand.Mag degree in Environmental or Health Sciences, Applied Sciences, a teaching degree with a specialization in Applied or Environmental Sciences, a nursing degree with specialization in Environmental Health, or other relevant education. The programme is also relevant for professionals in the Health or Environmental Health field looking for specialization.

Masters thesis

The Masters thesis is either written individually or with another person. The thesis is worth 60 ECTS. Students choose their advisor during their first semester. A thesis catalogue has been compiled in order to give students an idea of possible research areas associated with different advisors.

Teaching and Study Methods

Teaching and study methods are mainly focused on laboratory and fieldwork. Independent work is also emphasized. Students are responsible for presentations, and problem-based learning.

Evaluation

The thesis receives an independent grade, based on the written work and an oral exam. This is recorded on the diploma. External examiners and the Advisor for the Institute for Health and Environmental Science evaluate the student’s performance in all areas of the Masters programme.
